Common Large Pet Diseases

Pets like cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs are very famous companions of many human beings and also share their home with them. Even pets get affected by many diseases, not necessarily that all the diseases of the pet are contagious to human beings, but some of the diseases are transmitted from pets to the owners. People who get easily affected are the infants, elderly people and people with HIV virus, since their body immune system is week.

If pets are kept clean, healthy, free from parasites while taking care of personal and house hold hygiene, the risk of diseases transmitted from t he pet is minimized. The common diseases of the pets are listed below:

Infestation from mites and fleas:

Sarcoptes scabiei is a kind of a mite species which can affect a large number of pet species. The mites affect the dogs and foxes. This pet disease causes rashes and red spots which are itchy in nature. This pet disease can be communicable to people, it is treated by a medicated shampoo or drug on the particular affected spot is administered. Fleas on the other hand can survive in the environment for a longer time, unless and until the environment too is disinfected, it can affect the pet repeatedly.

Dermatophytosis infestation can be seen in dogs and cats. It is a fungal disease. It gets cured in the pets after some time on its own unless if the pet is on steroids. The pets can be treated with itraconazole, a topical solution.

Ear mites or otodectic mange infects the ear of the dogs, ferrets and cats. This pet disease can be easily controlled by applying acaricidal drug on the spot or ear drops can be applied topically.

Staphylococcal pyoderma is a kind of a baterial skin infection mostly affecting the dogs. Topical treatments are very effective.

Mycobacterium bovis and mycobacterium tuberculosis can affect both humans and cats and are easily communicable between each other. This pet disease is seen as nodules, or in non healing wounds or as a respiratory disease. Veterinary attention is very necessary.
